Something Borrowed free essay sample

The book I chose to read was Something Borrowed by Emily Griffin. The book has approximately 322 pages. I chose to read this novel because I remember watching the movie while flipping through channels and thought it was pretty interesting, and I figured the book would probably be better. I honestly also chose this novel because I need to read just a few more books before I can graduate and while skimming the book, it looked like an easy read and had an interesting enough topic so it would benefit me more. I have a hard time reading novels that I am forced to do. The genre of this book is romance and friendship. The main character is named Rachel, who is thirty and living in Manhattan, and has always been the quiet good girl and never really gets the chance to really love someone because Darcy steals the show. I want to be someones first choice. We will write a custom essay sample on Something Borrowed or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page (p. 103) Darcy, her best friend, is the exact opposite and is loud and out-going and who always seems to be in competition with Rachel. A quote to describe their friendship is found on page 2 and reads â€Å"To say you are my best friend is the understatement of the century; you are the sister I never had. †Dex is Rachel’s college love interest, eventually becomes Darcy’s fiance and is also the man Rachel is sleeping with. Ethan is Rachel and Darcy’s best guy friend and he encourages Rachel to stand up to Darcy and have a voice instead of letting Darcy to walk all over her. This novel takes place in Manhattan, New York in the city. She visits New York city frequently though. The story time frame last a few months in modern times . A quote to prove that she lives and works in Manhattan is found on page 36 and reads, â€Å"I look out of my window at the lights of Manhattan in the direction of his downtown office. † She went to NYU for college where she met Dex. Rachel is an attorney living and working in Manhattan. When she was in law school she fell for another student, Dex, who comes from a wealthy family, but she was too shy to say anything. When Rachel introduces Dex to Darcy, because she thought that he was out of her league, Darcy makes a move on Dex and gets him. Eventually, they get engaged and Darcy asks Rachel to be her Maid of Honor. However, Rachel still has feelings for Dex and still cant say anything because it is kind of her fault they are together. Darcy throws her a birthday party and Dex is there. When she and Dex are alone she blurts out that she had a thing for him in college which surprised him, and after drinking a little they spend the night together. They try to forget the whole thing and agree that it means nothing. But Rachel is horrified to discover that she has genuine feelings for him. He was my escape, and sometimes that can feel an awful lot like love. †(p. 132) Ethan, Rachels close friend, tells her that shell spend her entire life regretting that if she does nothing. â€Å"Darcy and I had been friends forever, but I think it was the first time that I realized the influence I have over her. I picked her wedding dress, the most important garment that she will ever wear† (p. 129). Although Rachel doesnt purposefully start out to sleep with Darcys fiance, the affair does continue. You’re all going to hell anyway, so you might as well do something for yourself . † (p. 149) Rachel tells Dex its over between them and gives him time apart to decide if he wants to marry Darcy or call it off. Rachel goes on a date with Marcus and ends up kissing Marcus. Dex finds out and is jealous. Later in the story, Darcy tells Rachel that she cheated on Dex and even lost her wedding ring in her Marcus’ place, which makes you root for Rachel and Dex. Dex doesnt know, but he calls of the wedding because he loves Darcy. Darcy asks Dex if there is someone else. He lies and says no. Dex goes straight to Rachel to tell her about the break up and just after he does Darcy shows up to tell Rachel and Dex hides in the closet. While in the closet, Dex hears Darcys confession about her affair with direct questions from Rachel and you find out that the affair is with Marcus and that Darcy is pregnant with Marcuss baby and wants to marry him and have the baby. Then, Darcy notices Dexs watch on Rachels nightstand and figures out that Dex is hiding in the closet. She opens it, screams at him that hes a liar. She leaves and tells Rachel you are dead to me. Darcy gives everyone an earful about how shes the victim, leaving out that she also had an affair and is pregnant. Dex moves out as Darcy demands. On the night of the nixed wedding, Dex spends it with Rachel. In the end, Rachel and Darcy are no longer friends and Dex and Rachel end up being together. I liked this book. Emily Griffin writes Darcy to be difficult to like so you don’t feel guilty rooting for Rachel and Dex. I find it difficult to believe that Rachel would want to be her friend, even after all that time, but that probably because I am the polar opposite. Still, these characters are incredibly self-centered I think. I liked the overall plot because it sounds like my life when I was younger, and I can relate. I had a â€Å"friend† named Kelsey and for some reason we were always in competition for the best clothes, makeup, boys, coolest phone, and tightest body. Now that we are older and don’t even live in the same town anymore, it’s different. Whenever we see each other, we always have this competition thing that drives me insane and I try not to deal with her as much I have to. Emily Giffin’s wonderfully written book shows you what happens between two friends when they fight over something they both feel is rightfully theirs. Rachel and Darcy loved Dexter, and they knew he loved them both. Darcy felt like she needed to win his heart, and Rachel just wanted to keep the peace. Overall, this novel has a strong story line and it is a very easy read more generated for young adults and teenagers.
